Current Legal status of E-Bikes and E-Scooters (Feb 2022)

  • At present E-Bikes and E-Scooters are not regulated in Ireland.
  • While currently defined as ‘mechanically propelled vehicles’ (MPV’s) there is no specific law governing their usage in Ireland.
  • The government is in the process of legislating for their usage on Irish roads via The Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021.

  • E-Scooter and E-Bike users are very vulnerable to Road Traffic Accidents and potentially to the resulting accident trauma.
  • This is due to
  • the lack of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE),
  • short reaction time,
  • low fall height,
  • higher speed of other vehicles,
  • lack of driver experience.
